Types of Mobile Payments in Canada
When we talk about mobile payments, there are two different things it can mean:
- Merchants accepting mobile payments: Your customer taps their phone (Apple Pay, Google Pay) to pay you.
- Merchants processing payments on mobile: You use your phone or tablet with a card reader to accept card payments.
This guide covers both.
Mobile Card Readers for Canadian Businesses
Mobile card readers (mPOS) turn your smartphone or tablet into a payment terminal. They're ideal for markets, food trucks, trades, and any business that takes payment outside a fixed location.
Square Reader (Best Overall)
Square's Bluetooth card reader is free for new merchants and pairs with the Square POS app on iOS or Android. It supports Interac debit tap, Visa/Mastercard tap and chip, and has a battery life of approximately 8 hours of active use.
Cost: Free (with new Square account). Processing: 2.6% per transaction.
Helcim Card Reader ($129)
Helcim's card reader connects via Bluetooth and works with the Helcim app. It accepts tap, chip, and swipe, and is fully certified for Interac debit and all major credit cards. Because Helcim uses interchange-plus pricing, this reader typically results in lower processing costs than Square for established businesses.
Cost: $129 CAD. Processing: IC + 0.15% + $0.06.
Stripe Reader M2 ($59 USD)
Stripe's card reader works with the Stripe Terminal SDK. It's designed for developers building custom payment applications. Not ideal for non-technical users but extremely flexible for custom setups.
Standalone Mobile Terminals
For businesses that want a standalone device without a phone:
Square Terminal ($399)
A complete payment device with a 5.5" touchscreen, built-in receipt printer, and built-in battery (all-day). Perfect for food trucks, pop-up retail, tableside service, or any business needing a portable, self-contained terminal.
Helcim Smart Terminal ($329)
Similar to Square Terminal โ standalone, touchscreen, built-in printer. Helcim's lower interchange-plus pricing makes the total cost of ownership lower than Square Terminal over time, especially for high-volume businesses.
Clover Flex ($649)
Clover's handheld terminal runs the full Clover app ecosystem. More powerful than Square Terminal for businesses that need Clover's app marketplace (loyalty, online ordering, etc.).
Tap-to-Pay on iPhone/Android
Both Apple and Google now allow merchants to accept contactless payments directly on a compatible iPhone or Android device โ no card reader required:
- Tap to Pay on iPhone: Available with Square, Stripe, and Helcim apps (requires iPhone XS or newer with iOS 16+). Customers tap their card or phone to the back of your iPhone to pay.
- Tap to Pay on Android: Available through Square and Stripe apps on supported Android devices (NFC required).
Canadian businesses: Note that Tap to Pay on iPhone currently accepts Visa, Mastercard, and American Express in Canada. Interac debit tap support via iPhone is limited โ customers using their phone as a digital Interac wallet (through Apple Pay with a linked debit card) are supported.
Apple Pay and Google Pay for Canadian Businesses
Your customers using Apple Pay or Google Pay are actually using their underlying card (debit or credit) through their device's digital wallet. From a merchant perspective:
- Apple Pay transactions are processed at the same rate as regular card transactions
- Google Pay transactions are the same
- No additional fees for accepting Apple/Google Pay
- All major Canadian processors support both
Apple Pay and Google Pay work online too โ your e-commerce checkout can offer a one-tap payment option for customers on their phone. This significantly improves mobile checkout conversion rates.
Mobile Payment Best Practices for Canadian Merchants
- Always offer tap: Most Canadians expect to be able to tap. If your terminal is chip-and-PIN only, you're behind the times.
- Display Apple/Google Pay logos: Online, show these payment method logos at checkout to boost conversions.
- Keep your reader charged: Dead batteries at busy periods cost sales. Charge overnight and carry a backup battery pack.
- Secure your phone: If using your phone as a terminal, ensure it has a strong PIN and auto-locks after 1โ2 minutes.
- Use cellular backup: For outdoor or mobile situations, ensure your reader has LTE backup or your phone's hotspot is available.

Our Recommendation
For most mobile Canadian merchants: start with Square Reader (free, instant) and upgrade to Helcim's card reader or smart terminal once you're processing $5,000+/month to save on fees. Food trucks and event vendors: Square Terminal ($399) is the most reliable all-in-one solution.
